Boards laid out in cut order

We milled this tub ourselves, from one second-growth western red cedar that was hand-felled near our shop in Eugene. We kept the boards in the order they came off the log. Each horizontal band around the tub is one continuous cut from that tree, so the grain follows you around all four corners.

Why it is discounted:

  • Worm holes. There are some small worm holes in the boards. Many people like them for the character they add.
  • Large knots. This is knotty cedar, with bigger knots than our standard grades.
  • Lining is not fully clear below the waterline. The fiberglass did not wet out fully when we applied it, so some areas look cloudy when the tub is empty. You cannot see this when the tub is full, and it does not affect the structure or the seal.

We built this pair to order for a customer, who then decided to go with clear cedar instead of knotted. We built their tubs again in a clear grade and put these two back into stock.

They are complete: assembled, lined and water-tested. Select tight knot is western red cedar with small, sound knots spread through the boards. It has more pattern than clear grain while staying smooth to the touch. The exterior is finished in a natural oil.

Two matching tubs also make a practical hot and cold setup: one on a heater like our cedar hot tub, one kept cold like our cold plunge. You can buy them as a pair or one at a time.

We have retired select tight knot from our standard lineup, so these are the last two we will build or sell in this grade.

Clear Port Orford Cedar Hot Tub

$4,500 $5,950

Clear Port Orford cedar tub in the shop, long side, before the lining is added
Before refurbishment

We first built this tub as a raw-wood soaking tub, with no lining. It is now back in stock, and we are refurbishing it as a lined hot tub with the same clear fiberglass-and-resin interior as the other tubs on this page.

Port Orford cedar is a pale, even straw color with a fine, tight grain and a clean lemon-ginger scent. It is the closest North American wood to Japanese hinoki. This tub is clear grain throughout, with no knots. The exterior is finished in Rubio Monocoat, a hardwax oil that soaks into the wood rather than forming a film on top.

With the lining, the tub can stay filled and heated all the time. The cedar still shows through the clear interior.

More photos to come when the refurbishment is done.
